Archive material and source history

Illmatic was a rap group that formed in the 1990s. Their debut single "I Need Ya Lovin'" came out in 1993 and became a hit, leading to an album of the same name. The group had four members: J.T. on lead vocals, Jay G as the rapper, DJ Jazzy handling the turntables, and Cool C producing the tracks.

They worked out of Brooklyn, New York, playing local block parties and open mics before getting signed. Their sound mixed hip-hop with R&B elements, heard on songs like "Pull Ot Ya Gutz" and "Still Ill." Jay G left the group in 1995, but the others kept going for a while.
