Archive material and source history
Ilma Cristina came from Santana do Ipanema in Alagoas. She started singing early, mostly for family and neighbors, without much formal training. Her first album came out in 1992, and the title track "Chegou o Tempo" caught on quickly. That song, along with others like "Lindo É" and "Santo Nome," helped her find an audience across Brazil.
She kept recording through the 1990s and beyond, putting out albums like Se Eu Pudesse Voltar in 1994 and Entre o Céu e o Inferno in 1997. Later on she released Flor do Caribe in 2013. Along the way she worked with other Brazilian artists, including Leonardo and Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano.
Some listeners early on questioned whether her style fit neatly into sertanejo traditions. She had a certain energy on stage and didn't shy away from speaking her mind. But she kept singing the way she wanted to, and people kept listening.
