IMA began as a collaboration between Manchester producers Mark Bell (who also works as Mr. Scruff) and Andrew Votel (known as Andy Votel) around 2004. Their first album came out in 2006, followed by 'Oceanic' in 2008, which included work with vocalists like Beth Orton and Lisa Germano.

Their track 'In Your Eyes (I See My Life)' became a recognizable piece in their catalog, alongside songs like 'Angeli Di Città' and 'Autoestima'. The 2008 album 'Oceanic' drew some mixed reactions at the time for its experimental direction.

Later albums included 'Song to the Siren' in 2012 and a compilation called 'Breathe' in 2015. Their music often blended ambient electronica with trip-hop and downtempo elements.
