Imaani formed in the mid-1990s with four vocalists: Marques Houston, Christopher Williams, Kevon Edmonds, and Ralph Tresvant. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1995 and included the single "Where Are You." After that first album, Williams and Edmonds left the group. Imaani continued as a trio and released two more albums, "The Way We Were" in 1997 and "Forever" in 2001.
Marques Houston, the group's lead singer, was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2001. He kept working on music after the diagnosis.
