Archive material and source history

IMAKUNI was a Japanese pop duo formed in 1994 by vocalist and guitarist Rika Matsumoto and keyboardist and vocalist Junko Iwao. They started playing small venues in Tokyo before signing with Pony Canyon in 1996 and releasing their debut single 'Zenshin Zenrei.'

In 1997, they recorded 'Pokemon Ieru Kana?' as the opening theme for the 'Pokemon: Indigo League' anime. The song became widely known through the show's run from 1997 to 1999.

Their music had upbeat pop melodies and playful lyrics, often about friendship and adventure. They performed with energetic stage presence, though the existing history notes they faced some media scrutiny and criticism about commercializing the Pokemon franchise early on.
