Archive material and source history
In Mantra formed in Lima in 2002 with vocalist José Manuel "Chema" Salcedo, guitarist Hugo Ortiz, bassist Ricardo Brenneisen, and drummer Renzo Villanueva. They put out their self-titled debut album in 2005, mixing rock and metal with Andean melodies. Songs like "Fortaleza" and "Fuga" came from that blend.
In 2010, the band faced accusations that "Fortaleza" resembled a traditional folk song. They denied plagiarizing and kept working. They released several more albums, including "Revolución" in 2007, "Crónicas de Fuego" in 2011, "Inmortal" in 2015, and "La Fuerza" in 2019.
Their sound shifted some over those records, touching on symphonic metal and progressive rock while keeping a foundation in heavy guitar and Salcedo's vocals. They built a following in Latin America and played festivals outside Peru.
