In Mitra Medusa Inri formed in 1995 with Seth Putnam on vocals and guitar, Ethan Allen on bass, and Dennis Herman on drums. They put out albums like 'The Inward Journey' in 1997 and 'The Darkness Between Us' in 2006. The title track from that later record, 'Darkness Between us,' became something of a touchstone for listeners, a slow, heavy song about addiction and mental illness.
Putnam's personal struggles with addiction and mental health were part of the band's story, affecting their stability and performances. Their lyrics often dealt with dark, personal themes, which drew a dedicated following but also some criticism. Drummer Dennis Herman left in 2007 and was replaced by Jeff Ruston.
The band ended after Seth Putnam died from an overdose in 2011. Ethan Allen and Dennis Herman have kept making music in other projects since. Songs like 'Disappointment Remains' and 'Swimming Overseas' still surface on streaming playlists, holding onto that small, specific corner of alternative rock they occupied.
