In Ruins

In Ruins formed in the late 1990s after another band broke up. The original members were Anders Ekman on guitar and vocals, Tomas Nilsson on bass and vocals, and Anders Hedlund on drums. Their music mixed doom, death, and atmospheric metal, which made it hard to categorize at first.

Their second album, 'Beyond the Black Lake,' became a touchstone for the band. The title track, along with songs like 'Forest of the Impaled' and 'Four Seasons of Grey,' showed their approach: slow, heavy arrangements with lyrics that leaned toward melancholy and introspection. Some listeners found this bleak, while others appreciated the directness.

They kept recording after that, putting out albums like 'The Cursed Land,' 'The Scars Behind the Melodies,' and 'The Great Silence.' The lineup changed over time, but the sound stayed rooted in that slow, atmospheric metal, sometimes bringing in folk or ambient textures. They never really fit into one genre, which might be why they built a specific, if modest, following.
