Retch

It's half past noon and she's still awaiting

Standing at the same corner as before

A postman in a hurry walks by the blind man

Without seeing in the world an open sore

As behind these walls

he's just cut his own wrists

As though worms and dust were some anaesthetic

A gargoyle lip-syncing

what a thief wheezes

And me here feeling this pathetic

While scorpions go into my mouth

And winds blowing southwards

have taken my soul

But a nagging zombie says straight from inside:

"Tu es mort, mon ami!"

And I know he is right

All these nights I can't sleep

And while I take a stroll at dawn

He comes with me

Walking into the sea he's weeping for his man

The old lady is shoplifting another pack of sweets

While he writes a novel never to be read

Outside some kids are playing football in the street

The owl on a tree branch - she's sort of drunk

You know how I hate that brand of cigarette

I've got bugger all a smack for having been so bad

They love Romeo & Juliet

While strangers go on with their lives

Happy husbands and wives

And that makes him retch

But a nagging zombie says straight from inside:

"Tu es mort, mon ami!"

And I know he is right

All these nights I can't sleep

He comes with me

Psyche as a butterfly comes here for me

And then she lands on my palm

She's just trying to learn what's meant by trust

For her pain it might mean a balm

A wind storm has come

But as I cut my thumb

It just falls calm
