Ini Kamoze

Ini Kamoze is a Jamaican reggae singer from St. Mary who first gained attention in the early 1980s. He worked with the Taxi Gang before going solo, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1984. His sound drew from dancehall and pop while keeping reggae at its center, heard on tracks like 'Babylon Babylon' and 'Who Goes There'.

In 1994, his single 'World-a-music' became a surprise international hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's upbeat rhythm and chant-like delivery made it a radio staple that year. He followed it with the album 'Here Comes the Hotstepper,' which included 'Betty Brown's Mother' and 'Wings With Me.'

After the mid-1990s, his output became less frequent. He released 'Lyrical Gangsta' in 1995 and 'Senior Citizen' in 2006. While he faced personal and legal difficulties that affected his career, his early 1990s work remains what most listeners know him for.
