Instituto Filhos da Misericórdia formed in São Paulo in 1999 as a collective of former gang members and drug addicts who turned to music as a way out. Their songs like 'Em Teus Braços' and 'Louvar a Deus' blend samba, funk, and hip-hop with lyrics about redemption and social issues. The group's founding members included Juliano Cordeiro on vocals, Marcello Mandel on guitar, Bruno de Oliveira on drums, Lino de Souza on percussion, and Wallace dos Santos on bass.
They released their first album 'Filhos da Misericórdia' in 2002, followed by 'Nosso Lar' in 2004 and 'Um Novo Amanhecer' in 2006. Their music often addresses poverty and addiction while offering messages of hope, as heard in tracks like 'Meu Jesus Me Tomou' and 'Muito Maior É Teu Amor'.
Beyond recording, they've established music schools in underprivileged neighborhoods. Their work has drawn both praise for its social impact and criticism about commercializing their message, but they've maintained a focus on using music to reach marginalized communities.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
