Instituto Mexicano del Sonido started in 2003 when Camilo Lara, who had previously played with the rock band Zurdok, decided to mix traditional Mexican rhythms with electronic production. Their first album 'Disco Popular' came out the following year, setting up their approach of blending cumbia with electronic beats.
Songs like 'Bienvenidos a mi Disco' and 'Hiedra Venenosa' show how they work with that combination, pulling from Mexican folk sounds while keeping things moving with club-ready production. They've had different vocalists come through over time, including Vanessa Zamora and Carla Morrison on some recordings.
In 2007 there was some noise about one of their tracks, 'A Girl Like You,' and whether it used a traditional Colombian cumbia sample properly. Lara said they had permission, but it was one of those moments where their mash-up of old and new raised questions about where the lines are.
They've played festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury, and put out albums including 'Suave Patria' in 2007 and 'A Ritmo De Cumbia' in 2009. The music keeps circling back to that electro-cumbia blend, whether on 'Mirando a las Muchachas' or the more bittersweet 'Sinfonia agridulce.'
