Instituto Periférico formed in Rio de Janeiro with vocalist Márcio Local. Their 2017 debut album 'Canja de Mestre' mixed samba, funk, and hip-hop, and included songs like 'Paz e Guerra.' The band's lyrics often addressed social issues in Brazil, which drew some criticism but also connected with listeners who shared those concerns.
They worked with other Brazilian artists including Gilberto Gil and Jorge Ben Jor. The group included percussionists Pedro Miranda and Léo Vidal, bassist and keyboardist Pedro Garcia, and guitarists Thiago Freitas and Rômulo Fróes. Their songs came together through collaboration, with each member bringing different musical ideas to the process.
Later albums like 'Crise Mundial' and 'Nação Preta' continued exploring political themes through Brazilian rhythms. The music maintained a raw quality in both its sound and its lyrical approach to inequality and other social topics.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
