Iracy Silva was born in 1961 in Juazeiro, Bahia, a city in northeastern Brazil. She grew up hearing the folk music of that region, and later found inspiration in the poetry of writers like Carlos Drummond de Andrade.
She began performing in the early 1980s and released her first album, 'Mulher do Brasil,' in 1985. Her songs often dealt with social themes, including poverty and inequality. One of her best-known compositions, 'Você Que Vive Neste Mundo,' is a direct plea for empathy.
She worked with several prominent Brazilian musicians, including Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil. Her later albums include 'Vento Leste' from 1996 and 'Agora' from 2013.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
