The Irish Rovers formed in Dublin in 1963, playing traditional Irish folk songs with a spirited energy. Their lineup has included Jimmy Ferguson, George Millar, Joe Clancy, and Wilcil McDowell, with later members like John Reynolds and Sean O'Doherty joining over time.
They've recorded dozens of albums, but are best known for sea shanties and drinking songs that became sing-along favorites. Songs like "Drunken Sailor," "Whiskey In The Jar," and "Donald Where's Your Trousers" have been their most enduring tracks, often played in pubs and at folk festivals.
In 1986, Ferguson and McDowell left the band after a dispute, but Millar and others continued performing as the Irish Rovers. They've kept playing the same kind of material for decades, mostly sticking to the traditional Irish repertoire they started with.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
