The Bertussi brothers, Carlos and Sérgio, came from Esteio in Rio Grande do Sul. They grew up with gaucho music, the rural tradition of Brazil's Southern Plains, and started singing together as teenagers.
In the early 1960s, they had a breakthrough with "Gaúcha Linda." The song caught on nationally, and they went on to record several albums through the decade, including Onde Anda o Céu and A Volta do Gaúcho.
Their music stayed close to gaucho themes, which sometimes drew criticism for being too simple or stereotyped. But they kept at it, Carlos on lead vocals and guitar, Sérgio on harmony and bass.
