The Irmãos Divino formed in 1982 in Ceará, with brothers Humberto, Luiz, and Raimundo playing traditional forró. They started at local festivals and gradually built a following, though the genre had limited reach outside Brazil's Northeast at the time. Their first album, 'Forró no Coração,' came out in 1992.
Songs like 'São Gonçalo do Amarante' and 'A Voz do Milagre' became staples in their set. They kept recording through the 1990s and early 2000s, putting out albums such as 'Tô na Roça' in 1997 and 'Chega Mais' in 2002. Their sound sometimes touched on samba and other Brazilian styles, but they stayed rooted in forró.
In 1994, 'São Gonçalo do Amarante' drew criticism from some religious listeners over its lyrics. The band kept touring Brazil, playing forró where it wasn't always familiar. They've been at it for decades now, still performing songs like 'Canoeiro' and 'Casamento do Bobo' the way they always have.
