Archive material and source history
Ishman Bracey was a blues singer and guitarist from Mississippi who recorded in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He worked with guitarist Charlie McCoy on some of his early sides, including 'Brown Mama Blues' and 'Jake Liquor Blues.' Those songs, along with 'Woman, Woman Blues,' were part of a small but significant body of work he made for the Victor label.
His music was straightforward country blues, delivered with a clear, expressive voice. He wasn't a flashy guitarist, but his playing supported the songs effectively. After his initial recording period, he largely stepped away from music for decades, working as a truck driver and later as a church deacon.
In the 1960s, during the blues revival, researchers tracked him down in Jackson, Mississippi. He was recorded again, this time for the Adelphi label, releasing an album called 'Ishman Bracey: The Famous 1928-1930 Recordings.' These later sessions brought his early work back to light for a new audience.
