Isis Regina was born Maria Rita Barcellos de Souza in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1945. She started singing in her local choir as a teenager and later moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1964. There she joined the group O Quarteto em Cy and began performing in clubs around the city.
Her debut solo album 'A Noite' came out in 1968, featuring the track 'O Altar É Para Isso' which became one of her most recognized songs. Other recordings like 'Canção de Um Servo' and 'Águas Cristalinas' also circulated among her listeners during this period.
She developed a reputation for being outspoken about political matters and maintaining an unconventional personal life, which sometimes drew criticism alongside her musical work. Her career faced some difficulties in the early 1970s, though she continued performing and recording.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
