A Puerto Rican singer whose conversational phrasing and durable recordings shaped salsa.
For his phrasing, try 'El Incomprendido'. For that raw, durable energy, 'Ahí Na Mas' still hits.
Rivera's voice had a rough, immediate quality that felt like talking even over complex arrangements. Songs like 'Caras lindas' and 'El Incomprendido' show his particular way with rhythm, and tracks like 'Ahí Na Mas' still turn up in DJ sets with an unpolished energy that doesn't date.
He started singing in church as a child in Santurce and worked with local bands before joining Rafael Cortijo's band in 1954, which produced standards like 'El Bombón de Elena'. After going solo in 1959 with the album 'El Sonero Mayor', he recorded through the following years until his death in 1987.
