Ithaka formed in Falmouth, Maine in 1994 with Michael Johnson, Josh Gilbert, and Reeve Carney. Their self-titled debut came out in 1997, mixing folk, rock, and ambient sounds. The band's second album, When We Were Kings, arrived in 2000 and included the single "Did You Ever?" which found a wider audience.
Carney left in 2003 to work on solo material. Johnson and Gilbert continued as Ithaka, putting out In Love and War that same year. They released one more studio album, Secrets of the Sea, in 2006. Other songs from their catalog include "Escape From The City Of Angels" and "So Get Up."
At some point, the band had a legal dispute with their former label over control of their music. They worked it out and kept going. Ithaka's recordings feature contributions from musicians like guitarist Gary Lucas and drummer Stewart Copeland.
