Background notes

Archive material and source history

Ivan Mládek was born in Prague in 1942. He formed his first band, Banjo Band, in 1968, drawing from jazz, folk, and country music. In 1977, he released "Jožin z Bažin," a satirical song about a swamp creature that became an immediate hit with its quirky lyrics and nonsense words.

His humorous songs often poked at social and political issues, which led to a ban from performing in Czechoslovakia in the late 1970s. Despite this, "Jožin z Bažin" gained international recognition and was translated into multiple languages. Mládek worked frequently with guitarist Luboš Andršt and bassist Petr Kalandra, releasing over 30 albums together.

His music, particularly songs like "Jožin z Bažin," remains a distinctive part of Czech culture.
