Ivar Bjørnson and Einar Selvik are two Norwegian musicians who have worked together for years. Bjørnson plays guitar and writes music, and he's known for being in the metal band Enslaved. Selvik sings and plays multiple instruments, drawing from Norwegian folk traditions. Their collaboration started when they tried mixing those folk melodies with Enslaved's heavier sound, which didn't sit well with some listeners at first.
They've put out albums like Skuggsjá in 2004 and Hugsjá in 2016, along with songs such as Um heilage fjell and Kvervandi. Their music often deals with Norse themes and mythology, but they've also worked with other artists, like the Icelandic group Árstíðir on a project in 2008. Other musicians like Arve Isdal on drums and Herbrand Larsen on keyboards have played with them at times.
Their sound isn't easy to pin down to one genre. It pulls from black metal, folk music, and traditional Norwegian elements, creating something that feels both ancient and immediate. They keep working on music that reflects their roots without sticking to any one style.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
