J-Be formed in Rio de Janeiro around 2005 with Peu Sousa and Léo Passos on vocals, guitarist Juca, and drummer Guilherme Kazax. Their debut single 'Você Não Está Aqui' caught on quickly, leading to their first album 'Menos Que Perfeito' in 2007. They followed it with records like 'A Vida Não Dá Truco' in 2009 and 'Do Outro Lado da Rua' in 2018.
Their sound mixed pop, rock, and samba, heard in songs like 'Dói O Amor' and 'Fato Real'. In 2010, they had a legal dispute with a former manager over the copyright to 'Você Não Está Aqui', which was resolved in the band's favor. Five years later, their performance at a pro-impeachment rally drew criticism from some quarters.
The group stayed together through those years, with Sousa's vocals and Passos's harmonies as central elements. They put out 'Não Vou Me Reter' in 2012 and kept recording into the late 2010s.
