Background notes

Archive material and source history

J. Brown was born John Michael Brown in 2002. He grew up singing in church choirs and at local talent shows, influenced by older soul singers like Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder. His 2019 track "Don't Rush (feat. Tank)" became his breakout hit, pulling in millions of streams and some critical attention.

In 2021 he put out his debut EP, Soul City, which mixed traditional soul with modern R&B. He followed it with singles like "Ain't My Fault" and "Forgive Me." He often works with a band that includes keyboardist Alex Acosta, drummer Marcus Washington, and bassist Lamar Brown, who also sings background vocals.

Brown has collaborated with a few other R&B artists, including Tank, Ari Lennox, and Musiq Soulchild. His sound stays pretty firmly in that soulful, vocal-driven lane he established early on.
