Background notes

Archive material and source history

J a D a is an electronica duo from Bristol, England, made up of brothers Jon and Dave Aplin. They put out their first album, State of the Art, in 1994. Their second album, Reading You, came out in 1997 and gave them their biggest hit with the title track.

That song Reading You got to number one in the UK, but it also brought them some trouble. People argued about what the lyrics meant, and some called them misogynistic. After that, their records didn't sell as well.

They kept making music anyway, putting out albums like Essence in 2008 and Lost and Found in 2014. Those later records had more of a trip-hop and ambient feel, a bit quieter and more introspective than their earlier work.
