His debut solo album was called 'De Volta ao Começo.' Later releases included 'Meu Lugar,' 'J Gomes Ao Vivo,' and 'Essencial.' His music draws from samba, pagode, and MPB, and other songs like 'Escolhido' and 'Não Vai Afundar' appear among his most popular tracks.
In 2010, J Gomes faced plagiarism allegations regarding the song 'Ainda É Cedo,' though he maintained his innocence. He has also been vocal about social and political issues at times. His current band includes João Pedro Gomes on acoustic guitar, Guilherme Guedes on electric guitar, Igor Costa on bass, and Anderson Pereira on drums and percussion.
