Jouko Ensio Karjalainen started making music in the early 1970s with his band J. Karjalainen & Mustat Lasit. Their first album, 'Mustat Lasit,' came out in 1976, followed by others like 'Tämän taivaan alla' in 1978 and 'Keltainen kääpiö' in 1980. He was listening to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen around that time.
He went solo in the mid-1980s and put out the album 'Sydän' in 1985. That record had 'Laura Häkkisen silmät' on it, which became one of his best-known songs. Other tracks people still play include 'Runo,' 'Verinen mies,' and '16. Avenue.'
There were some personal difficulties in the early 1980s, including legal issues and struggles with addiction. Those experiences later showed up in his writing. He kept recording after that, with albums like 'Tähtilamput' in 1988 and 'Pyhä toimitus' in 1995.
