Molenaar went solo in 1986 with the album "Alleen," which included "De Ouwe Wijvenmolen." That song became a hit in the Netherlands, a ballad about lost love that resonated widely.
He kept a fairly low profile musically after that period, though "De Ouwe Wijvenmolen" remained his best-known work. The song still turns up occasionally on Dutch radio, a piece of folk that feels both specific to its place and plain-spoken in its sentiment.
