Archive material and source history
Jack Bruce was born in Glasgow in 1943. He studied cello and piano early on, but it was the bass guitar that became his main instrument. In the early 1960s, he played with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, where he met Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker.
In 1966, Bruce, Clapton, and Baker formed Cream. Bruce's bass playing and vocals were central to the trio's sound on albums like 'Disraeli Gears' from 1967. After Cream ended in 1968, he released solo albums including 'Songs for a Tailor' in 1969 and 'Harmony Row' in 1971. He also worked with other musicians like John McLaughlin and Lou Reed.
His later solo work included songs such as 'Born Under a Bad Sign' and 'Baby Jane'. Bruce died in 2014.
