The Jackson Southernaires formed in Jackson, Mississippi in 1947, with Paul Lewis, Robert 'Bobo' Hicks, James 'Sonny' Warner, and Willie James Lowe making up the original lineup. They were a gospel group from the start, working in a tradition of vocal harmony that had deep roots in the South.
Their song 'Going To A Better Place' became one of their best-known recordings, along with tracks like 'There Is Power' and 'How Far Is Heaven.' They released albums over several decades, including Saints and Angels in 1965 and Rest for Your Soul in 1975.
In 1962, while performing in Cairo, Illinois, the group faced a disruption from audience members shouting racial slurs during a song. They kept singing. The incident was noted at the time as an example of the tensions gospel groups could encounter while touring.
Their 1990 album was titled Going to a Better Place, named for the song that had become a staple of their sets.
