Editor's note

Jackyl's unapologetic rock and roll odyssey

A hard rock band from Atlanta that carved out a loud, boisterous niche in the early '90s.

For the full Jackyl experience, start with 'The Lumberjack' and 'Down on Me.' That's the band in a nutshell, loud, a little silly, and impossible to ignore.

Jackyl mattered because they delivered exactly what their fans wanted: loud, simple, and fun rock anthems. Songs like 'The Lumberjack' became signatures, and their self-titled 1992 debut, with tracks like 'Down on Me,' captured that early energy. They weren't trying to reinvent the wheel, just keep it spinning fast and loud.

Formed in Atlanta in 1991, they broke through quickly with their 1992 debut album. The follow-up 'Hornography' in 1993 solidified their place, though lineup changes and controversies around that album's cover followed. They kept releasing music through the 2000s, like 'Relentless' in 2002, with a loyal fan base sticking around.

Jackyl formed in Atlanta in 1991, with Jesse James Dupree on vocals, Jeff Worley on guitar, Tom Bettini on bass, and Chris Worley on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out the next year and included songs like 'Down On Me' that caught on with rock radio. The band's live shows were loud and messy in a way that worked for them, built around Dupree's raspy delivery and the Worley brothers' straightforward guitar and drums.

A second album called 'Hornography' followed in 1993. Bassist Tom Bettini left the band not long after that. Jackyl kept putting out records through the '90s and 2000s, like 'Cut the Crap' and 'Relentless,' but they never quite matched the attention of those first two. They've had different lineups since, with Roman Glick on bass and Matt Russell on drums in recent years.

You can still hear what people liked about them on tracks like 'Heaven Don't Want Me (And Hell's Afraid I'll Take Over)' or 'Push Comes To Shove', simple, heavy guitar riffs and lyrics about drinking, fighting, and not taking things too seriously. It's bar-band rock played at arena volume, without much pretense.
