Background notes

Archive material and source history

Jake Holmes was a folk singer from Cincinnati who recorded in the late 1960s. His song 'Dazed and Confused' started as a slow, introspective piece on his 1967 album 'The Above Ground Sound of Jake Holmes.'

Led Zeppelin later covered the song, transforming it into a heavy rock anthem. Jimmy Page has acknowledged Holmes's influence on that version.

Holmes released a few more albums like 'Jake Holmes' in 1969 and 'The Sheltering Sky' in 1970. He sometimes worked with other musicians, including bassist Don Payne and guitarist Jon Mark in what was called the Electric Band.
