James Junior formed his band in 1997 with producer Alê Siqueira on bass and Márcio Mello on drums. Their self-titled debut came out the following year, mixing rock, reggae, and Brazilian pop. He grew up in Salvador, Bahia, where he sang in church choirs and absorbed local rhythms like axé and samba-reggae before moving to São Paulo.
The band's third album, 'Olhos de Deus' from 2002, became their breakthrough. James Junior has been outspoken in his lyrics about social issues, which has drawn criticism alongside praise. In 2007, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a photographer.
