Jani Lane was the lead singer and main songwriter for Warrant, a band that came out of Hollywood in the late 1980s. Their first album, 'Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich,' came out in 1989 and had hits like 'Heaven' and 'Down Boys.' Lane wrote a lot of their material, including songs like 'I Can't Help Myself' and 'Cherry Pie.'
Warrant put out several more albums through the 1990s, like 'Cherry Pie' in 1990 and 'Dog Eat Dog' in 1992. Lane's voice had a particular blend of power and a kind of vulnerable edge that fit the band's style. He also worked on solo material in the 2000s.
Lane struggled with substance abuse for years, and that was often part of the story around him and the band. He died in 2011 at age 47. Some of the songs he wrote for Warrant, like 'Heaven' and 'I Can't Help Myself,' still get played on rock radio.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
