Jauperi

Jauperi formed in São Paulo in 1997, taking their name from a character in a poem by Mário de Andrade. The trio includes André Abujamra on vocals and guitar, Eduardo Amarante on bass, and Maurício Takara on drums. Their work often draws directly from Brazilian poets like Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Paulo Leminski, setting those words to music rather than writing conventional pop lyrics.

Their first album, 'Cidade dos Poetas,' came out in 2000, followed by records like 'Entre Poetas' and 'Ciranda dos Poetas.' Songs such as 'Amanda' and 'Flores da Favela' show their approach, melodies that feel both intricate and accessible, with arrangements that blend folk, jazz, and Brazilian popular styles. The band has faced some criticism for being too literary, but they've kept at it, releasing albums steadily into the 2010s.

They've won Brazil's Prêmio da Música Brasileira and have had their music used in films and theater. While not everyone connects with their poet-focused style, Jauperi has built a following in Brazil and abroad by sticking to their particular blend of verse and song.
