The Jawga Boyz came out of West Virginia with a sound that felt like the backwoods they sang about. Their track "Chillin' in the Backwoods" became something of a calling card, a laid-back anthem that caught on with listeners who recognized its particular rural rhythm.
They put out their first album, Backwoods Remedy, in 2009, followed by Honky Tonk Hurricane in 2011. Still Chillin' arrived in 2013 and featured that signature song. Their music often drew from traditional country, but with a contemporary, easygoing feel that avoided too much polish.
At one point, some of their lyrics about moonshining and rural life drew criticism, but it didn't seem to shake their core audience. They kept recording, with Country Thunder in 2015 and Back to the Backwoods in 2017. The group included Moses "Doc" Sellards on lead vocals and guitar, Ace "The Axe" Bonham on lead guitar, Noah "Big No" Pillman on bass, and Tucker "Turkey" Hagerty on drums.
