Jean Carneiro grew up in the Morro do Salgueiro favela in Rio de Janeiro, where she absorbed the sounds of samba and bossa nova. She started singing early, influenced by Brazilian vocalists like Elis Regina and Gal Costa. In the early 1990s, she performed with the band Nosso Tempo before going solo.
Her debut album came out in 1997, sharing its name with the single "Toca Uma Moda Pra Mim." That song became widely known, mixing MPB with soul elements. She has since put out other records, including Alma Brasileira in 2002, Raízes in 2007, and Bossa Soul in 2015.
Carneiro has been open about social issues in her work, which has sometimes drawn attention. She plays with a band that includes Osmar Barutti on piano, Leo Cunha on bass, Bruno Santos on drums, and Fabiano Souza on guitar.
