Jean Carter was born in Maces Spring, Virginia in 1926. She was the niece of Maybelle Carter, Sara Carter, and A.P. Carter, who formed the original Carter Family. In her early teens, she joined their group, adding her soprano voice to their traditional folk and country material.
After the Carter Family stopped performing together in 1956, she recorded solo albums like "Songs of the Carter Family" in 1960 and "Jean Carter Sings the Carter Family Classics" in 1974. She worked within the same musical territory her family had established, singing songs like "E."
She died in 2000. Her recordings preserve a particular strand of American folk music that her family helped define.
