Archive material and source history
Jean do Kavakko came out of Salvador, Bahia, where he grew up hearing the rhythms around him. He started as João de Souza Pereira before putting together the band Kavakko in the early 2000s, with Paulinho Andrade on bass and Tatau on drums.
Their song "Arranha" caught on in 2012, with a beat that pulled from samba and axé. It became one of those tracks people knew, alongside "Ed City" and "Grilinho."
Some of his lyrics touched on social issues, which drew criticism at times. He kept writing, though, and the band kept playing their mix of Brazilian styles without much fuss.
