Jean e Jefferson were a Brazilian duo from Salvador, Bahia, active from the late 1960s onward. They were João Gilberto Trindade (Jean) and Jefferson da Silva Santos. Their 1972 debut album '5x Americano' gave them their breakthrough hit with the title track, which became a national sensation in Brazil.
That song '5x Americano' and others like 'A Maior Festa' and 'Mulher Avião' helped define their sound, which mixed samba and bossa nova with pop. They kept recording through the 1970s and 1980s, putting out albums like 'Brega Total' in 1974 and 'Pecado Capital' in 1978.
By the mid-1980s they were still making music, with records like 1984's 'Eu Quero É Botar Meu Bloco na Rua' showing some funk and disco touches. The duo had creative tensions between Jean's quieter approach and Jefferson's more outgoing style, but they managed to work through several albums despite those differences.
