Background notes

Archive material and source history

Jeannine Deckers was a Belgian singer born in 1933. She joined the choir of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels as a teenager. In 1956, poet Jean Broussolle approached her with lyrics for a folk song about a young girl, and Deckers composed the music. The result was "Dominique," a ballad with a lilting melody that became her signature piece.

"Dominique" found immediate popularity in Belgium and spread to France, Italy, and other countries. It was translated into numerous languages and became a staple of popular culture during that period. She released several albums including "Jeannine Deckers Sings" in 1958 and simply "Dominique" in 1960.

Deckers was a nun in the Dominican Order when "Dominique" became popular, which drew some criticism for performing a secular song while in religious life. She left the order in 1966 to focus on her music career and personal life, later marrying and having children. Deckers continued recording music through the 1960s, with albums like "Songs of Faith and Inspiration" in 1965.
