Archive material and source history
Jefferson Airplane formed in San Francisco in 1965 with Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, and Signe Anderson. They played early shows at places like the Fillmore Auditorium. In 1967, they released 'Surrealistic Pillow,' which included 'White Rabbit.' That song became a kind of shorthand for the psychedelic moment.
Signe Anderson left not long after that album came out. Grace Slick joined on vocals, and Spencer Dryden came in on drums. From around 1968 into the early 1970s, they put out records like 'After Bathing at Baxter's,' 'Crown of Creation,' and 'Volunteers.'
