Jefferson Starship formed in 1974 after Jefferson Airplane dissolved, with Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Craig Chaquico, Pete Sears, and John Cipollina as early members. They released albums like 'Dragon Fly' and 'Red Octopus' in the mid-1970s, and their sound shifted from the psychedelic rock of their predecessor toward more accessible rock and pop. The band's lineup changed over time, adding players like keyboardist David Freiberg and drummer Aynsley Dunbar.
In 1979, they put out 'Freedom at Point Zero,' which included the ballad 'Sara.' Written by Kantner about his daughter, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Other hits from their catalog include 'Jane,' 'Miracles,' and 'Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now.'
The group faced internal tensions and lineup shifts through the 1980s, but kept recording and touring. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
