Jessi Colter was born Mirriam Johnson in Phoenix, Arizona in 1943. She grew up listening to country music, with Hank Williams and Patsy Cline among her early influences. In the early 1970s, her recording of 'I'm Not Lisa' brought her national attention in country music.
In 1969, she met Waylon Jennings, and their partnership became central to her musical life. They wrote and recorded together, with songs like 'Storms Never Last' becoming part of their shared repertoire. Her albums from that period include 'Storms Never Last' and 'I'm Not Lisa' in 1975, followed by 'Jessi' in 1976 and 'Diamond in the Rough' in 1977.
Her music often dealt with personal themes, and she recorded songs like 'Please Carry Me Home' and 'Never Got Over You' that reflected this direct approach. She also recorded gospel material, including 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow.' Her voice had a plain, unadorned quality that suited the songs she chose.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
