Jessica Ayo is a Brazilian band that formed in 2009 in Salvador, Bahia. The group is led by singer Jessica Ayo and includes Bruno Rafael on percussion and vocals, João Paulo on guitar and bass, and Thiago Souza on drums. They started out playing in local bars and street performances around Salvador.
Their debut album 'Capoeira Moinho' came out in 2012, with the title track becoming one of their most recognizable songs. They've released several albums since then, including 'Roda Viva' in 2015, 'Negra Melodia' in 2018, and 'Empoderada' in 2021. Other songs in their catalog include 'Não Vou Mais Chorar,' 'Ninho,' and 'Pro Nosso Samba Fortalecer.'
The band has performed internationally in Europe and North America, and their music has appeared in films and documentaries. In 2014, there was some discussion about their use of traditional capoeira attire during performances, which the band addressed by talking about their respect for the art form.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
