Jesus Jones formed in the late 1980s with Mike Edwards on vocals and guitar, Jerry De Borg on bass, Alan Doughty on keyboards, and Gen on drums. Their first album, 'Liquidizer,' came out in 1990, followed by 'Doubting Thomas' in 1991. That second album included 'Right Here, Right Now,' which became their biggest single. The song's bassline was once challenged as too close to James Brown's 'Funky Drummer,' but the band defended it and kept it in their catalog.
They put out 'Perverse' in 1993 and 'Already' in 1997 before taking a break. When they came back in 2004 with 'Revolution,' they kept playing shows and eventually released 'Passages' in 2019. Other tracks like 'Need To Know' and 'The Princess Of My Heart' show their mix of rock with dance and hip-hop rhythms, which felt fresh in the early '90s alternative scene.
Their sound never fit neatly into one category, and that was part of what made them stand out at the time. They're still around, playing those older songs live for fans who remember when 'Right Here, Right Now' was everywhere.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
