Jex Thoth formed in Los Angeles around 2008, built around the duo of Erika Thöis and Christopher Esguerra. Thöis handled vocals and some instruments, while Esguerra worked with synthesizers and electronics. Their first album, 'Beneath the Eyeless Sky,' came out in 2010.
Their music pulls from ambient, goth, and folk textures, creating a sound that's hard to pin down. They followed that debut with 'Blood Moon Rising' in 2013 and 'To the Great Nothing' in 2017. Songs like 'Warrior Woman' and 'Nothing Left To Die' show their mix of atmospheric electronics and Thöis's vocal style.
Some listeners found their approach challenging, with lyrics that touched on darker or mythological themes. The band kept working within that space, putting out records every few years without much concern for fitting neatly into a scene.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
