Jimmy Dorsey was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania in 1904 and played clarinet. He and his brother Tommy Dorsey, a trombonist, formed the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra in 1934. The band featured vocalists Helen O'Connell and Bob Eberly.
In 1941, the orchestra recorded "Amapola," a cover of a Mexican song. That version became their biggest hit. Other songs from their catalog include "Tangerine," "Besame Mucho," and "Blue Champagne."
Dorsey died in 1957. The 1941 recording of "Amapola" remains the song most associated with his name.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
