Jimmy González formed Grupo Mazz in Monterrey in 1986, naming the band after Mazatlán, Sinaloa, where his father was from. He sang lead and played accordion. Their sound mixed corridos with romantic ballads, and they built a following in Mexico and with audiences in the United States.
One of their best-known songs is "A Las Escondidas," which appeared on a 1993 album of the same name. Other tracks like "Acaso No Soy" and "Vuelve Conmigo" became staples in their set. In 1999, the group's lead guitarist José Luis Villareal died in a car accident. They released an album called "Recordando a Villareal" in 1989, though that date seems to precede the incident mentioned in some accounts.
The band put out records steadily through the 1990s and 2000s, including "Con Orgullo Porteño" in 1991 and a tribute to José Alfredo Jiménez in 2000. Their lineup shifted over time, with González remaining the constant figure until his death in 2018.
